Farewell to one of TV's pioneers, the beloved Bob Keeshan who played Captain Kangaroo and Clarabell the Clown on the Howdy Doody Show as he entertained generations of children. Keeshan died last Friday in Windsor, Vt. after a long illness at age 76. Keeshan won 6 Emmy Awards and three Peabody Awards. His first TV appearance was in 1948 when he played the voiceless, horn-honking Calarabell the Clown, a role he created and played for 5 years. "Captain Kangaroo" went on the air in October 1955 and played until 1984. The show came back after a brief hiatus and ran for six more years on PBS I met the good Captain in Kansas City a few years ago and he was indeed a real gentlemen. He will be missed.
