Confessions Of A Hollywood Publicist

Daniel D. Meyers, APR Four-Star Press, Kansas City

Recently some local movie theaters announced special morning screenings for mothers with their small children. Back in the mid-1960's, the Dan Meyers & Company public relations agency created the idea of the specialized screenings with their 'Housewife's Spectacular' promotions.

The novelty of moving images wore off about one hundred years ago. For a century filmmakers searched for ways to draw in audiences to view their latest efforts. Dan Meyers retired from the movie publicity business a few years ago. He then decided to let the public see how movies are promoted beyond the paid advertisements.

From a small Iowa town, Dan grew up when the town movie theater also hosted live radio broadcasts and generally served as a community center. Meyers' book is full of movie publicity history. He tells how it evolved over the decades. In a recent interview Dan stated that the book is "a partial autobiography. My own story, as I lived it."

The concise sections of the book touch on many different promotional events. Catch glimpses of all kinds of movie people and other well-known folks. From Ice-T to Rush Limbaugh, from Christopher Reeve to animator Chuck Jones, they've all been to Kansas City. Many came from the heartland in the first place.

Do you remember a disco dance called The Swarm? Dan's wife Ruby created the dance for a local promotion of Irwin Allen's The Swarm. Warner Brothers took the dance national. As a long time KC film critic I saw and participated in many of the stunts mentioned in the book. Look for the picture of Dr. Doug Moore (Film critic from Mike Murphy) milking the cow for Funny Farm. I was next in line, but got cropped out of the picture. I still wonder how Dan got mayor Berkley to declare "Kansas City Tap Dance Day."

Look for "Confessions of A Hollywood Publicist" at Borders stores in Johnson County and at Barnes & Noble on the Plaza. Next time you go to the movies, try to remember just what got you to choose the film you see.

"Confessions of a Hollywood Publicist" is a reel treat...Confessions dishes inside stuff on ..JOHN TRAVOLTA, RUSSELL CROW, rabble-rousing documentarian MICHAEL MOORE ('FAHRENHEIT 9/11" "BOWLING FOR COLUMBINE" )

"My Favorite is Chapter 7: "How to use your Muse" (RAY BRADBURY). I don't care about a fig about Hollywood's rich, spoiled and overpampered elite...The book is still worth a read."
Cris Coleman, THE DAILY NONPARELL.

(Dan Meyers) lets the public see how movies are promoted beyond paid advertisements. As a long time critic I saw and participated in many stunts in the book. Science Fiction Fans will want to read the sections on RAY BRADBURY ("How to use your Muse"), "SUPERMAN THE MOVIE" (Christopher Reeve), FLASH GORDON (Buster Crabbe),"TWILIGHT ZONE, THE MOVIE," STEPHEN KING (STANLEY KUBRICK'S "THE SHINING"), and 'THE EXORCIST"...
Vince Koehler, THE OLATHE DAILY NEWS

"Previewing through the book I can't wait to set in bed at night and devour it like a box of candy. How wonderful you preserved this area of film promotion history. The photographs are a wonderful illustration of these last great days of Hollywood. You are lucky to have been on the forefront of these last great days in the business."
