Have a fear of flying? “Flight” is not intended to make that fear any easier. Whip Whitaker (Denzel Washington) is a long time pilot who will have his abilities tested. Whip has just boarded the plane following a night of heavy drinking and drug use. Once on board it seems his drinking is an everyday occurrence when he takes the liberty of having a morning cocktail. As the flight path starts out a little rocky Whip shows his talent to his co-pilot Ken Evans (Brian Geraghty) as he finds smooth sailing through the turbulence. The flight plan is right on track until a mechanical problem has the plane taking an immediate nose dive. Whip uses his quick thinking to instruct Ken on what to do to help him try to regain control and save the innocent lives on board. All his training has brought him to this moment of landing the plane safely. Once he does so in the best way possible he is recognized as a hero. However that label is quickly questioned when Whip’s drinking and drug use comes to light. As the plane crash is investigated Whip could be facing homicide charges. Fearing what his future holds he turns to the airline hired attorney to help cover up his drinking problem and hopefully save him from a prison sentence. It seems that even with a pending investigation Whip has no fear as his addiction still takes priority in his life. “Flight” is a thrilling ride with ups and downs to the end. Denzel has an amazing performance as a man with the daily struggle as an alcoholic. John Goodman is hilarious as Whip’s good friend who also acts as his dealer. The first thirty minutes of the film will have you on an amazing ride that will have you thinking about who is piloting your next flight. “Flight” is a must see that gives new meaning to flying the friendly skies.
