Another war film, with an exception, this one is entertaining. Charlie Wilson’s War stars Tom Hanks as Charlie Wilson, a Texas congressman who has covert dealings in Afghanistan. His efforts to assist the rebels in defeat against the Soviets, has long lasting and historical results. Now I am not one to enjoy a true story involving war. I find realistic storytelling sometimes to be boring and hard to remain focused. Charlie Wilson has changed my way of thinking.

charlie-wilsons-war A true heroic story of how one man went out of his way and made a difference. Charlie Wilson used his allies to help support and finance his way of thinking, to put an end to the Soviets advancements on the rebels. Not only did the film focus on his political career, but also on his extracurricular activities. The film portrays Charlie as a ladies man. While he is using his charm on all the girls, he is trying to assist the men, woman and children in Afghanistan who have been severely injured and left without homes. He enlists millionaire Joanne Herring (Julia Roberts) to help financially in their joint cause. Using money, intelligence and Charlie’s pull in the congress they manage to provide weapons to fight back the Soviets and in turn eventually take back there borders.

This film has humor, which made a world of difference. To take a piece of history and turn it into a masterpiece that contains laugh out loud scenes is an amazing feat. I applaud Aaron Sorkin for the ability to do such. Every minute of the film was entertaining to watch and although Tom Hanks is the star of this film, and did have an astonishing performance to offer, I must say scene stealer is Julia Roberts. Her portrayal of Joanne was brilliant and has to be one of her highest rated performances to date. If you want to catch a glimpse of history, make sure to check out this amusing look at it. Charlie Wilson’s War is chock full laughable scenarios that will capture your attention until the final scenes.
